The Abingdon Police Department is comprised of men and women who are dedicated to serving the criminal justice need of the community. The primary goal of the department is to prevent crime with the underlying goals of crime detection, apprehension of criminals, motor vehicle and pedestrian safety, and traffic and parking enforcement. The department is also responsible for safety and security at numerous public events including; festivals, parades, concerts, and sporting events.
The department is also heavily involved in service oriented activities to address the needs of the public and civic organizations. These include; child safety seat inspection and installation, educational programs for students, youth groups, civic organizations, and scouting organizations. The department also works closely with the Washington County School System through a variety of efforts including the School Resource Officer program.
Tony Sullivan has served as Town of Abingdon Police Chief for 7 years. He is a graduate of Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and is pursuing a Certificate in Local Government Management from Virginia Tech University. His background includes 20 years of law enforcement service.
